The Beginning: A New Kind of Ocean Education

For many people, the ocean can feel like another world, powerful, beautiful, and at times, intimidating. That’s why Aquatic Futures Foundation (AFF) created the Ocean Comfort Course, a first-of-its-kind program designed to help people feel at home in the ocean.

“This is ground zero,” Kory explains. “Bring your friend, your family member, or your partner who’s terrified of the ocean.”

The Ocean Comfort Course fills a missing gap between traditional swim lessons and advanced diving programs. It’s not about becoming an athlete or a scientist, it’s about developing confidence, knowledge, and a sense of belonging in the water. Over two sessions this year, participants learned to snorkel, understand beach dynamics, and practice ocean safety drills, including how to escape rip currents and self-rescue.

By teaching people how California’s coasts work, from the difference between rocky and sandy beaches to how local surf breaks form, the program helps demystify the ocean for those who didn’t grow up with access to it.

“Sometimes the most important thing we can do isn’t teaching science, it’s helping someone feel safe and welcome in their own backyard.”

Building Confidence, One Wave at a Time

Each course brings moments of transformation, moments when fear gives way to freedom. Kory recalls one particularly powerful experience during the most recent Ocean Comfort Course: “We had a high school student who was pretty comfortable at first, but by the end, she was standing calmly in the deep end, breathing and relaxed. You could see the peace on her face. Afterwards, she told me how powerful that moment was for her.”

For Kory, it’s these moments that matter most. Watching people go from anxious to at ease, from hesitant to joyful, is a reminder that access to the ocean is about more than recreation, it’s about empowerment and healing.

“When someone learns to trust the water, it changes how they see the world, and themselves.”

Expanding the Vision

The Ocean Comfort Course began as a small pilot, but the results were immediate and inspiring. In its first year, the program served 50 participants in the first session and drew 80 sign-ups for the second. Looking ahead, Kory’s goal is to double participation to at least 100 people next year, expanding access and impact. The long-term vision is to partner with major brands, sports teams, and community organizations to bring the course to new audiences across Southern California.

With more capacity and facilities, such as a large dedicated pool or coastal training hub, the ripple effects could be enormous. “If we had the workforce and space, we could reach so many more people,” Kory says. “The ramifications from this are really big.”

“This is how we start: one person, one wave, one lesson at a time.”

The Future of Ocean Belonging

What makes the Ocean Comfort Course truly special is its simplicity, it meets people where they are. For those who’ve never felt at ease in the water, it offers tools, understanding, and community. For those who already love the ocean, it deepens their connection and sense of stewardship.

Kory sees it as both the foundation of the Aquatic Futures mission and the start of something much larger. “This is how we begin the journey,” he says. “Before we can train scientific divers or conservation leaders, we have to make people feel safe and welcome in the ocean. That’s where transformation begins.”

Together, these small steps, these moments of courage and curiosity, are building a new generation of ocean advocates who see the sea not as something distant, but as something theirs.
