OPEN WATER SCUBA COURSE
The Aquatic Futures Foundation (AFF) with the support of the Bay Foundation is offering the Open Water SCUBA Course. This program is specifically designed for aspiring marine scientists with zero previous diving experience who are looking to gain the foundational skills necessary for a career in ocean conservation.
As part of our mission to increase accessibility in marine science, this course is offered at no cost to selected aspiring marine scientists or individuals with a passion for protecting the ocean.
What’s Included
This comprehensive introductory program provides everything you need to safely enter the underwater world:
- PADI Open Water Diver Certification: The world’s most recognized SCUBA certification, allowing you to dive independently with a buddy to depths of up to 18 meters.
- Complete Gear & Materials: We provide all necessary SCUBA equipment and training manuals so you can focus entirely on your learning.
- Professional Instruction: Learn from experienced instructors who specialize in training future researchers.
- Foundational Science Introduction: Gain a baseline understanding of how diving is used as a tool for marine data collection and ecological monitoring.
The Commitment: What to Expect
While this is an introductory course, it requires dedication and a focus on safety.
- Training Phases: The course involves a combination of independent e-learning, confined water (pool) skill development, and four open water checkout dives.
- The Requirements: Applicants must be science-oriented individuals or students pursuing a career in marine science. You must be physically and mentally fit and comfortable in the water.
- The Schedule: To support students and early-career professionals, training is primarily scheduled over Friday through Sunday.
- Location: Training takes place in San Pedro and South Los Angeles, utilizing local pools and beach sites for initial dives.
Beyond the Basics: Building Your Network
One of the most significant advantages of training with AFF is the community. While this specific course does not include a work immersion with The Bay Foundation, it fully integrates you into the Aquatic Futures Foundatio’s professional network.
Participants will connect with a community of marine scientists, alumni, and conservation professionals. These connections are vital for finding future internships, research opportunities, and mentorship as you progress from an Open Water diver to a scientific researcher.
Foundational Skills You Will Learn
- SCUBA Gear Assembly: Learning the mechanics and safety checks of life-support equipment.
- Dive Physics & Physiology: Understanding how pressure affects the human body.
- Buoyancy Fundamentals: The first steps toward achieving the skills required for scientific work.
- Safety Protocols: Mastering emergency procedures and buddy communication.
Applications will officially open in June 2026
